TOPIC:  The two-day battle was fought near the Confederate capital, with more than 11,000 casualties and the loss of the primary Southern field army commander. This was the first major combat in the Eastern Theater after nearly a year had passed since Bull Run/Manassas. The possession of Richmond was at stake during the battle. However, Seven Pines/Fair Oaks has been largely overlooked by historians.
