TOPIC: The loss of Robert E. Lee’s Special Orders No. 191 is one of the Civil War’s enduring mysteries.  In this meticulous study, Alexander Rossino presents a bold new interpretation of the evidence surrounding the orders’ creation, distribution, and the loss outside Frederick in September 1862.  Rossino made extensive use of primary sources to explore these subjects and other important questions related to the orders.  The result is a well-documented reassessment that sheds new light while challenging long-held assumptions.

SPEAKER: Residing in the heart of Civil War country in western Maryland, Alexander B. Rossino, PhD, is an independent historian and author. His early work focused on the history of World War II.  After a hiatus of some years, Dr. Rossino turned his attention to the American Civil War. He is the author of  Their Maryland: The Army of Northern Virginia from the Potomac Crossing to Sharpsburg in September 1862 (Savas 2021) and the co-autho with Gene M. Thorp of The Tale Untwisted: General George B. McClellan, The Maryland Campaign, and the Discovery of Lee's Lost Orders (Savas 2022). Both books challenge long-held beliefs about the 1862 Maryland Campaign and offer new insight into one of the America Civil War's most important periods.
