Lecture Topic:  Clayton Butler will discuss Alabama's White Unionists during Secession, the Civil War and Reconstruction. Alabama was one of the first states to secede and the site of the Confederacy's first capital. Butler will examine why a not inconsiderable number of citizens took a Unionist stand and how they did it. He will also discuss what partisans in the North and throughout the Confederacy thought of them. Alabama's white Unionists shine a valueble light on the stakes of the war and its aftermath as contemporaries understood them. The Unionists also played a crucial role in the course of Reconstruction and establishing the nature of the postwar order.
