Author/Historian Jonathan S. Jones discusses the first epidemic of opioid addiction in America.  It arose from the use of morphine when treating wounded soldiers/sailors/marines during the American Civil War.  Jones discusses the hows and whys while concentrating on the effects of addiction on the lives of those who lived with it.  It is through the advancement of medical knowledge and regulation that the epidemic was finally arrested decades later.
